Proposed structure for a crossed-laser beam, GeV per meter gradient, vacuum electron linear accelerator

چکیده
We propose a dielectric-based, multistaged, laser-driven electron linear accelerator structure operating in a vacuum that is capable of accelerating electrons to 1 TeV in 1 km. Our study shows that a GeV/m gradient is achievable using two 100 fs focused crossed-laser beams, repeated every 300 mm, operated at a peak power of 0.2 GW and an energy density of less than 2 J/cm on the accelerator structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~96!00406-4#

A DIELECTRIC-BASED, GeV/m CROSSED-LASER-BEAM ELECTRON LINEAR ACCELERATOR*
The acceleration gradient of a conventional RF accelerator is limited to about 50 MeV/m. To generate TeV electrons for next generation high energy physics, an RF accelerator would require a distance exceeding 20 km. In this paper, we propose a dielectric-based, multistaged, laser-driven electron linear accelerator operating in a vacuum that is capable of providing 1 TeV electrons in 1 km. Our s...
متن کاملThe Physics Experiment for a Laser - driven Electron Accelerator
A physics experiment for laser-driven, electron acceleration in a structureloaded vacuum is being carried out at Stanford University. The experiment is to demonstrate the linear dependence of the electron energy gain on the laser field strength. The accelerator structure, made of dielectric, is semi-open, with dimensions a few thousand times the laser wavelength. The electrons traverse the axis...
متن کاملPROGRESS TOWARD E-157: A 1 GeV PLASMA WAKEFIELD ACCELERATOR
A plasma based wakefield acceleration (PWFA) experiment, scheduled to run this summer, will accelerate parts of a 28.5 GeV bunch from the SLAC linac by up to 1 GeV over a length of 1 meter. A single 28.5 GeV bunch will both induce the wakefields in the one meter long plasma and witness the resulting acceleration fields. The experiment will explore and further develop the techniques that are nee...
متن کاملOPTICAL BUNCHING OF RELATIVISTIC ELECTRONS FOR INJECTION INTO A GeV PLASMA BEATWAVE ACCELERATOR
A proposed GeV plasma beatwave accelerator (PBWA) requires a high power 1 pm laser running on two frequencies. The vacuum interaction between such a laser and a relativistic electron beam is one mechanism whereby the electrons can be bunched such that when injected into the PBWA they occupy only small regions of phase situated at the peaks of the accelerating field. This is exactly what is requ...
متن کاملFEL Simulations for the LCLS
A first Design Study Report has recently been completed [1] for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), a proposal to build an x-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) as a single pass SASE (SelfAmplified Spontaneous Emission) amplifier. The proposal includes the use of a very low emittance electron beam accelerated up to 15 GeV by the last third of the S...
